About us

The Toxicology Service provides specialist services for patients presenting to the Emergency Department following poisoning or because of a snake or spider bite. We also specialist care for poisoned patients requiring management within the Intensive Care Unit or a hospital ward.

We are one of only two hospital toxicology services in Victoria.

We employ a unique group of senior medical specialists with training in both Emergency Medicine and Clinical Toxicology. The service provides education and training to doctors working in emergency departments and intensive care units who provide care for poisoned patients.

We works closely with the Victorian Poisons Information Service, a statewide service providing advice to the public, health care providers, and regulatory agencies about all aspects of poisoning.

  We provide advice about what to do if someone has been poisoned, overdosed, made a mistake with medicines or has been bitten/stung by a venomous creature.

• Emergency

  Austin Health Emergency is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 000 in an emergency.

  We care for and treat critically-ill patients in a highly technological environment.

• Drug & alcohol service

  We care for and treat people with substance use disorders.

You do not need a referral to use this service.

In a medical emergency, call 000 and ask for an ambulance.
