Screening tests to do before your spinal annual review
Now we are back to face-to-face clinics it is encouraged to arrange with your GP to have screening tests of your urinary tract and renal function completed prior to your review.
This information is useful to have on your file and to discuss with you at your appointment with the multidisciplinary team.
Where can I get procedures done?
You can get these procedures done at:
- your closest public hospital
- an accessible private diagnostic facility
Be aware there may be a wait times to get an ultrasound done at some radiology centres, which also includes our facilities at the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
Required tests
Tests that are required are:
- Urinary tract ultrasound without bladder distension if you have a suprapubic or urethral catheter. Clamping of the catheter IS NOT recommended or required. However, if you do not have a permanent catheter, then a full bladder may be useful to determine your bladder capacity & post void residual.
- Plain abdominal x-ray - Kidneys, Ureters & Bladder (KUB) - useful if the ultrasound is done without bladder distension and also to gauge faecal loading.
- Blood collection for urea, electrolytes, and creatinine (U & E) - looking at renal function.
Please arrange for these results to be faxed in advance of your appointment to the Spinal Outpatient Nurse - VSCS Specialist Clinics on: 9496 5176
