About us

We provide speech pathology services to adult patients at Austin Hospital, Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital and Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre.

Speech pathologists assess and manage patients with communication and swallowing problems.

Communication problems can include:

• Slurred speech
• Difficulty understanding
• Difficulty speaking
• Difficulty reading and writing

Swallowing problems can include:

• Coughing when eating and drinking
• Food getting stuck in your throat
• Difficulty chewing

Our services

Our speech pathology services are available to patients who have swallowing or communication problems, when they are in hospital or rehabilitation.

  We care for and support people after surgery, accident or illness to regain function, independence and wellbeing.

• Community Rehabilitation Services

  We are a short-term, goal-based service that supports people in the community to meet their rehabilitation goals through an individualised therapy program.

• Tracheostomy care

  We care for and support people living with a tracheostomy.

• Child & youth mental health

  Speech pathologists work with our mental health professionals to provide care and support for children, young people and their families.

• Our multidisciplinary approach

  Speech pathologists are part of the multidisciplinary team providing care and support for cancer patients.

Referrals

For patients

If you are in hospital, and your care team has been managing your communication and swallowing problems, you may need to attend one of our clinics once you leave hospital. Your care team will organise a referral for you.

Speech Pathology services are available to all Austin Health patients.

Requests from external healthcare providers are considered on a case by case basis for specialist speech pathology services that are not available in the community, such as our swallowing and voice instrumental assessment clinics.
