Austin Health is proud to announce the launch of the Rainbow Health Working Group, a vital new initiative dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our diverse LGBTIQA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex, Queer/Questioning, Asexual, and other sexually and gender diverse identities) community. The group consists of enthusiastic staff members from a wide variety of departments across the organisation.
The Rainbow Health Working Group has been established with a clear goal: to identify, address, and champion the specific health needs and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community within Austin Health's services. This includes reviewing current practices, advocating for policy enhancements, developing education and training programs for staff, and fostering a welcoming and safe environment for patients, families, and staff who identify as LGBTIQA+.
The working group aims to:
- Improve access and experience, and ensure LGBTIQA+ patients feel safe, respected, and understood, leading to better engagement with health services and improved health outcomes.
- Enhance staff capabilities and equip Austin Health staff with the knowledge and skills to provide safe and affirmative care for LGBTIQA+ individuals.
- Advocate for inclusivity and drive systemic changes that embed LGBTIQA+ inclusion into the fabric of Austin Health's operations and strategic planning.
- Foster a welcoming environment and create spaces where LGBTIQA+ individuals feel seen, heard, and valued, reflecting Austin Health's commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
Michelle Marriner, Partnering with Consumers Lead, shares, “I joined the Rainbow Health Working Group because everyone deserves to come to work or access care as their true authentic self. It’s about making Austin Health safer and more inclusive for my colleagues, our patients and everyone who walks through the door.”
This working group embodies Austin Health's commitment to providing equitable, inclusive, and person-centred care for all, and a workplace where our people can bring their authentic selves to work and feel a strong sense of safety, purpose and belonging.
“I’m grateful to be part of this working group, being able to contribute to creating a space where everyone feels welcome, seen, and supported. At Austin Health, inclusion means more than just words; it’s about taking action to ensure our workplace is safe and respectful for all. That includes embracing inclusive recruitment practices and providing equal employment opportunities, so our workforce can truly reflect the community we serve,” says Edwina Ross, Talent Acquisition Specialist.
The establishment of the Rainbow Health Working Group marks an exciting and significant step forward for Austin Health. It underscores our commitment to creating a healthcare environment where every person feels safe, respected, and receives the highest quality of care, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. We look forward to the positive impact this group will have on our patients, staff, and the broader community.
