Our Disability Action Plan (DAP) is in place for four years until the end of 2026.
Below is an overview of some of the progress made in the last six months, January to June 2024, and some of the key priorities for the next six months.

Priority Area 1: Inclusive
Key actions under Priority Area 1: Inclusive are:
- 172 Austin medical staff attended training on, ‘Small Change, Big Impact: Disability and the patient experience’.
- 223 staff completed a survey about their baseline disability knowledge & confidence.
- We offer remuneration for formally onboarded consumer partners.
- We now have posters for staff on language about disability and how to ask the disability question.
Priority Area 2: Accessible
Key actions under Priority Area 2: Accessible are:
- Easy English version of the Disability Liaison Officer (DLO) poster is now available.
- The Emergency Department rebuild will have a ‘changing places’ toilet.
- The project to support dedicated recharge points for powered mobility users has been closed. If need is identified in the future, the project may be revisited.
Priority Area 3: Effective
Key actions under Priority Area 3: Effective are:
- Research has started to help us understand how the DLO program improves access to care.
- Our NDIS program lead roles have started and are supporting staff to understand the NDIS.
- Ability@Austin are now offering 10 services.
- DLO program referrals continue to grow overall, 517 referrals across inpatients and outpatients between January and June 2024.
Key priorities
Key priorities over the next 6 months are:
- A Workplace Adjustment Guideline to support staff will be endorsed.
- We are about to start a project improving our website to improve accessibility.
- Identify staff language skills, including Auslan, to improve patient experience.
- We will update our NDIS documentation for staff.
- Disability identifier question set report will be published.
