Our progress - Disability Action Plan

Our Disability Action Plan (DAP) is in place for four years until the end of 2026.

Below is an overview of some of the progress made over the past two years, January 2023 to December 2024 and some of the key priorities for the next 2 years.

Priority Area 1: Inclusive

Key actions under Priority Area 1: Inclusive are:

  • We have asked all formally onboarded consumers the disability identifier question & if any adjustments or assistance needed.
  • Disability Liaison Officer Program (DLO) held 30 Education Sessions to over 960 staff.
  • Annual celebration of International Day of People with Disability allows targeted positive focus on disability.

Priority Area 2: Accessible

Key actions under Priority Area 2: Accessible are:

  • Easy English version of the Australian Charter of Healthcare Rights & DLO Poster are available.
  • Auslan has been included as a language in the language skills badge program, supporting staff to self-identify alternative languages they can communicate in with patients.
  • Website updates have been completed to improve consistency, the use of inclusive language and shared resources to support patient centred care.

Priority Area 3: Effective

Key actions under Priority Area 3: Effective are:

  • 39,740 individual patients have been asked the Disability Identifier question set on admission with 5,343 identifying as having a disability.
  • The Autism Care Plan was relaunched & is now available for staff on the electronic medical record.
  • Our NDIS documentation is being updated for staff. A NDIS newsletter is sent out bi-monthly to support our staff.

Key priorities

Key priorities over the next 2 years are:

  • Staff disability awareness training to be launched.
  • Increase focus on disability workforce.
  • Website platform redesign and upgrade.
  • Review work areas to improve sensory accessibility for all patients.
  • Systemic change for Auslan access.
  • Investigate self assessment to audit accessible wayfinding.
  • Improve the experience for patients transitioning to adult services.
  • Risks: The evaluation of patient care preferences is on hold due to current resources.
