Support after sexual assault

Our approach at Northern CASA

We believe

  • Sexual assault is any unwanted sexualised behaviour that makes someone feel frightened or uncomfortable. This can include touching and non-touching behaviours.
  • Sexual assault is a crime that violates a person’s human rights. There is no excuse for sexual assault.
  • Victim/survivors have a right to be heard and believed.
  • Responsibility for sexual assault always rests with the offender.
  • Sexual assault happens worldwide, in all communities and can happen to anyone.
  • Sexual assault is a social issue that occurs because of power imbalances between the genders and in the social, justice, political and economic systems.
  • Ending sexual assault and its effects can be achieved through changes to attitudes and social and structural change.
  • Sexual assault impacts on individuals, families and the wider community. The impact can be physical, emotional, spiritual, financial and social.
  • People can and do overcome the effects of sexual assault. The recovery journey is one of courage, hope and dignity.
  • Counselling is based on a client-centered model of empowerment and recovery and utilises a range of evidence-based trauma therapy approaches.
