Congratulations to Dr Mehrdad Nikfarjam from Austin Health's surgical team, who received a Medal for the Order of Australia on 26 January.

Dr Nikfarjam is one of the highest volume liver, pancreas and biliary surgeons in Australia and is instrumental in leading world class interventions and research into pancreas and liver cancer.

He strongly feels that no patient should be denied the possibility of surgical cure, no matter how difficult the case may be.

“I feel very honoured having received this award for my contributions to the field of pancreatic and biliary surgery,” said Dr Nikfarjam.

“I am very privileged that I have had such great mentors that helped me develop as a surgeon scientist. I feel that in every field, achieving great things reflects having a great team of supporters around you. I am very lucky to work with such a great group of medical and nursing staff at Austin Health.”

In addition to his roles at Austin Health and as Associate Professor with the University of Melbourne, Department of Surgery, Dr Nikfarjam is a founder of Pancare Foundation www.pancare.org.au – a national not-for-profit organisation that aims to improve the survival and support for Australians diagnosed with pancreatic, liver, stomach, biliary and oesophageal cancer.

“My biggest contribution to society is the establishment of Pancare Foundation. This achievement, like everything else has been possible because of the effort of a multitude of people, including friends, family, patients, and my colleagues.

The charity provides support for people living with cancer and their families from the point of diagnosis through to treatment and beyond.

“We have a long way to go to achieve a cure for pancreatic and biliary cancers, but we are several steps closer. Like most major achievements, there are no elevators to the pinnacles of success, you simply have to take the stairs,” said Dr Nikfarjam.

Chief Executive Officer Adam Horsburgh thanked Dr Nikfarjam for his contribution and role at Austin Health.

“It is wonderful to have the contributions of Mehrdad on the Austin Health team. He brings an expert and empathetic approach to his specialty. This Order of Australia honour is very well-deserved.”
