What to expect

• If you have monthly periods, it is best to have your mammogram a week after the start of your period, as your breasts will not be as tender.
• If you have breast implants, please let us know so we can schedule a longer appointment – as extra views may be required.
• A mammogram takes around 30 minutes. Expect to be in the Radiology Department for at least 1 hour – possibly longer if you also require a breast ultrasound. Friends or relatives are not able to be in the Mammography room with you.
• A trained female radiographer will explain the procedure to you. She will place your breast on a special platform and compress it gradually with a clear plastic paddle. This is necessary to get the very best image possible. You may feel some discomfort during the compression. This should last only a couple of seconds.
• During most scans we will take two images taken of each breast. One is from top to bottom and the second is from the side on an angle. This is to include the muscles and glands under your armpit.
• It is very important to keep as still as possible.
• In some cases, the images taken are unclear, and you may need to have another scan or an ultrasound of your breast.

What to bring

When you come to hospital for your appointment, you need to bring:

• Any paperwork that you have been given about your test or examination
• Medicare card
• Health care card/concession card (if applicable)
• Private health insurance details (if applicable/if you want to use it)
• Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
• X-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
• Medicines you need to take while you are here
• List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes) including herbal supplements and vitamins
• Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame (if applicable)
• Your blood glucose meter and log book (if applicable)
• WorkCover or TAC details (if applicable)

What to leave at home:

• Jewellery
• Anything metal
• Other valuables
