About the program
Austin Health offers the IMG Education and Training Program as a 12‑month program designed to support international medical graduates transitioning into the Australian healthcare system.
The program includes a 10‑week supervised observership placement, during which participants rotate through a range of clinical units. IMGs also have access to a variety of education programs and learning opportunities throughout the year.
Participants can accumulate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours for their chosen CPD home program.
Learning opportunities
- Over the 8 months there is full access to the hospital education & the Austin Health Sciences Library. (HMO / Intern / Grand Rounds / Emergency)
- Dedicated IMG education during your 10-week observership
- The 10-week observership will rotate through different units: General Medicine, Surgery, Emergency, Aged Care and Psychiatry.
- Assigned into one of 3 cohorts over the 12 months consisting of 5 IMG Doctors in each intake.
Essential criteria
Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
Australian citizenship or permanent residency
Passed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) MCQ Examination – Part 1
English language proficiency
Demonstrated by either:
- IELTS overall score of 7 or above, or
- OET score of B or above in each category
(Results must be less than 2 years old)
Primary medical degree completed within the last 10 years
Desired criteria
The following criteria are desirable but not mandatory:
- Passed AMC Clinical Examination – Part 2
- Completed a minimum of 12 weeks full‑time equivalent clinical work within the last 3 years
- More than 2 years’ previous medical practice experience
