International medical graduate program

Our International Medical Graduate (IMG) Education and Training Program supports overseas‑trained doctors to transition to the Australian healthcare system through supervised clinical observation and structured education.

About the program

Austin Health offers the IMG Education and Training Program as a 12‑month program designed to support international medical graduates transitioning into the Australian healthcare system.

The program includes a 10‑week supervised observership placement, during which participants rotate through a range of clinical units. IMGs also have access to a variety of education programs and learning opportunities throughout the year.

Participants can accumulate Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours for their chosen CPD home program.

Learning opportunities

  • Over the 8 months there is full access to the hospital education & the Austin Health Sciences Library. (HMO / Intern / Grand Rounds / Emergency)
  • Dedicated IMG education during your 10-week observership
  • The 10-week observership will rotate through different units: General Medicine, Surgery, Emergency, Aged Care and Psychiatry.
  • Assigned into one of 3 cohorts over the 12 months consisting of 5 IMG Doctors in each intake.

Essential criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

Australian citizenship or permanent residency

Passed the Australian Medical Council (AMC) MCQ Examination – Part 1

English language proficiency

Demonstrated by either:

  • IELTS overall score of 7 or above, or
  • OET score of B or above in each category
    (Results must be less than 2 years old)

Primary medical degree completed within the last 10 years

Desired criteria

The following criteria are desirable but not mandatory:

  • Passed AMC Clinical Examination – Part 2
  • Completed a minimum of 12 weeks full‑time equivalent clinical work within the last 3 years
  • More than 2 years’ previous medical practice experience
