Gynaecology & family planning

We provide advice, consultation and contraceptive care for women, and offer both medical and surgical methods of abortion (termination of pregnancy).

About us

Check with your GP to see if they offer these services. You may be able to access them in your local community rather than by coming to hospital.

We do not provide general gynaecology services. General gynaecology, obstetrics and neonatal services provided at the Mercy Hospital for Women.

Our services

We provide the following services:

  • Advice on the contraception options that best suit your needs
  • Where an implant or hormonal IUD is the best option, you can often have one inserted on the spot during your appointment
  • Contraceptive options discussed can include:
    • Etonorgestrel (Implanon)
    • Levonorgestrel intra uterine system (Mirena IUS)
    • a copper IUD
    • the combined oral contraceptive pill
    • the progesterone only pill
    • tubal ligation
  • Medical and surgical abortion
  • Updates and training to general practitioners (GPs), including in abortion/pregnancy and IUD insertion

What you need to bring

Every time you come

  • Medicare card
  • Health Care Card and/or concession card (if you have one)
  • Private health insurance card (if applicable/if you want to use it)
  • Adverse drug alert card (if you have one)
  • Previous x-ray films, scans, ultrasounds or any other test results or reports
  • Medicines you need to take while you are here
  • List of medicines you are currently taking (or the boxes), including medicines you have bought without a prescription, such as herbal supplements and vitamins
  • Glasses, hearing aid, walking frame

For your clinic appointment

  • Your appointment letter
  • Any special items listed on your letter
  • TAC or Workcover claim number (if relevant)

For your day procedure

  • Responsible adult carer to stay with you to hear instructions, help you and take you home
  • Comfortable day clothes, such as a tracksuit

Our locations

You may have your surgery at the Austin Hospital or Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital.
