Graduate Physiotherapy Program

Our program is designed to provide you with opportunities to develop and grow in a supportive environment. You will receive individual supervision, in addition to our extensive in-service education program.

About our program

Our graduate physiotherapists participate in a rotation program.  The rotations are designed to expose graduates to a wide variety of clinical conditions to build an excellent foundation in physiotherapy skills and knowledge. We are committed to the development of our graduates, and all rotations are supported by highly experienced clinicians.

Program streams

Our innovative model of care - ‘the right physio at the right time’ forms the basis of our program streams.

We align our acute work with three streams of care based on the patients’ physiotherapy care needs.  For example, a person who may be on an orthopedic ward but has a significant respiratory deterioration is treated by the clinician with the necessary respiratory skills despite their physical location in the hospital.  By triaging patients according to their individual needs instead of location, we help our patients to access the right care, by the right physio at the right time.

What we offer

  • Three rotations per year
  • Large variety of acute, subacute and community rotations (26 different rotations in total)
  • Opportunities to work in statewide services and specialist units (Victorian Spinal Cord Service, Liver Transplant Unit, Acquired Brain Injury Unit, Victorian Respiratory Support Service, Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre, Intensive Care Unit)
  • Dedicated clinical supervisor
  • Minimum 10 hours of clinical supervision (formal sessions and point of care supervision)
  • Allied Health New Graduate Program
  • Dedicated 8-month Research rotation with the Professor of Physiotherapy
  • Regular in-service and journal club program

Supervision structure

The Department has embedded formal supervision processes to ensure we are helping everyone to reach their career goals and be the best clinician they can be. All staff in our department have an allocated clinical supervisor. We have set a minimum requirement of 10 hours per year of supervision which may include both reflective “formal” and point-of-care “informal” supervision.

Professional development

Our department has regular in-services and professional development opportunities, a monthly research meeting (to hear about new research projects) as well as regular journal clubs in all streams.

New graduates also have access to an Allied Health New Graduate Program run by the Clinical Education Unit to assist with the transition into professional work life.

Grade 1s may have the opportunity to participate in Cardiorespiratory Acute Skills in Hospitals (CRASH) course. This theoretical and practical course runs twice a year. New graduates are enrolled depending on rotations to ensure that the right learning occurs at the right time.
