About us
People seek genetic counselling when they have concerns about their health or the health of their children with conditions which may be inherited.
Our Clinical Genetics service is a a team of clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors, medical oncologists and support staff, working together with other Austin Health specialists.
Our team provides genetic counselling which helps people make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing through genetic diagnosis, counselling and support.
Appointments are government funded and there are no out-of-pocket costs for attending an appointment.
Our services
We work with individuals, their families and their doctors to provide the following services:
- Assessment or diagnosis of a genetic condition
- Genetic counselling and discussion regarding genetic or genomic testing
- Advice about managing health or future health risks
- Support and counselling related to issues arising from a genetic diagnosis
We provide genetic counselling services at Austin Hospital, Mercy Hospital for Women, Northern Health and in the community.
Our clinics
Clinical genetics clinics
Clinical genetic services are provided to children and adults for many general and subspeciality conditions.
We run the following clinics:
- General Clinical Genetics Clinic
- Neurogenetics Clinic
- Cardiac Genetics Clinic
- Renal Genetics Clinic
- Family Cancer Clinic
Family (familial) cancer clinics
We provide genetic counselling services at various locations including:
- Austin Hospital
- Northern Health
- Eastern Health
Some specialist clinics can only be offered at specific locations.
Familial Cancer Clinics are also held in the following regional locations:
- Albury/Wodonga
- Shepparton
- Ballarat
You will be offered an appointment either in person or where possible via Telehealth (video call).
Prenatal genetic clinics
Prenatal services for the north east of Melbourne and Victoria are coordinated by the Clinical Genetics team at Mercy Hospital for Women.
Referrals
You need a referral from your GP, specialist or health practitioner to access this service.
If you are concerned about a genetic risk in your family, you are welcome to contact our genetic counsellors. A referral will be required prior to arranging an appointment.
