What’s happening?
Austin Hospital is upgrading its Emergency Department to support 30,000 more patients every year. To prepare for this project, construction work will take place in the hospital carpark from late June 2025 until January 2026.
What you need to know
During construction there will be less parking spaces available, and there will be more dust in the Austin Hospital carpark.
In preparation for your hospital visit, please consider the following:
- Arrive early to allow enough time to find a parking spot.
- Consider having someone drop you at off an alternative entrance to the hospital, other than the Austin Hospital car park.
Special advice for patients with a weakened immune system or lung conditions
If you have a chronic lung condition or a weakened immune system, there will be more dust in the carpark during construction. If you have these health conditions, we recommend you:
- Use an alternative entrance to the hospital, other than the Austin Hospital car park. See more information about alternative entrances at Austin Hospital.
- Wear a mask when near construction areas or in the Austin Hospital car park.
- If you have concerns, talk to your healthcare team.
More information about the Emergency Department upgrade
The Victorian Government is investing $275 million to expand the Austin Hospital’s emergency department.
The project will:
- add up to 29 extra emergency treatment spaces
- deliver an upgraded short stay unit
- deliver improved clinical administration areas
Main construction is on track to start later this year.
The Austin Hospital will remain fully operational while the expansion works take place.
Thank you for your patience as we work to improve Austin Hospital.
