Work experience and structured workplace learning (SWL)
Applications for Work Experience or Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) in 2025 are now closed.
Austin Health partners with Banyule Nillumbik Local Learning and Employment Network (BNLLEN) to help coordinate work-based learning opportunities for secondary school students.
This includes:
- Indigenous Careers in Health placements
- Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) placements
- Work Experience placements
Work-based learning opportunities give students the chance to observe a hospital environment in action and to learn about the diverse jobs available within the health industry.
Student placement is arranged for a 1 block week period from Monday to Friday.

Indigenous Careers in Health program
Since 2016, Austin Health has proudly offered an Indigenous Careers in Health program to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. The week-long program looks at a range of specialisations. Students also have the opportunity to speak with staff and medical students about study and career choices.
Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)
SWL targets mainly year 11-12 students enrolled in the Vocational Education and Training (VET) program to acquire related skills and knowledge in an industry setting.
Work experience
Work experience placements typically target year 10 students. Work experience offers students industry exposure in the health industry and opportunity to observe a workplace in action.
