About us

The Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Rehabilitation Unit is a 12 bed statewide inpatient rehabilitation service set in the gardens of the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre.

We care for and support people who have had a variety of brain injuries, including traumatic brain injury, infections, hypoxia (lack of oxygen) or strokes. 

We manage patients who have complex thinking, emotional and behavioural difficulties who require specialised care.

Our services

The ABI Rehabilitation Unit provides intensive rehabilitation using a multidisciplinary approach.

Patients admitted to the unit are assessed by our team to identify strengths and any areas requiring attention.

Therapy programs are developed for each patient in collaboration with the patient and their family. We regularly review these programs. Staff work with patients to set realistic goals, with an emphasis on assisting patients to resume previous life roles.

The length of stay in the unit varies, but we aim to provide between 2 weeks and 6 months of rehabilitation. The team provides a rough estimate of time when patients arrive, but this is reviewed every week and may be moved forward or back depending on progress.
